Traditional Recipe for Homemade Bread

This traditional homemade bread is perfect for both novice and experienced bakers. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a light and airy bread with a crispy, golden crust. Enjoy it fresh from the oven or let it cool to room temperature. It’s ideal for sandwiches, toast, or simply a plain slice with butter.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Lukewarm water 1 1/2 cups (370 milliliters)
Dry yeast 2 teaspoons (10 grams)
All-purpose flour 4 cups (500 grams)
Salt 1 teaspoon
Preparation Time
  • Prep time: 20 minutes
  • Cooking time: 25-30 minutes
  • Rising time: 2-3 hours
  • Total time: 3-4 hours

Instructions

    1. Activate the Yeast:
      • In a large bowl, mix together lukewarm water (370 ml) and dry yeast (10 g). Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast is fully dissolved and bubbly.
    2. Make the Dough:
      • Add 500 grams of flour and 1 teaspoon of salt to the yeast mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon or your hands until a shaggy dough forms.
    1. Knead the Dough:
      • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead by hand for 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time.
    2. First Rise:
      • Place the dough in a clean, lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until it has doubled in size.
    3. Shape the Dough:
      • Punch down the risen dough to release any air bubbles. Shape the dough into a loaf or your desired form, then place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet or in a greased loaf pan.
  1. Second Rise:
    • Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise again for another 30-45 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
  2. Bake the Bread:
    • Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  3. Cool and Serve:
    • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy your freshly baked bread warm or at room temperature!

Tips

  • For a softer crust, brush melted butter on top of the bread after baking.
  • Add seeds or herbs to the dough for extra flavor.

Enjoy this delightful traditional homemade bread, perfect for any occasion!
